Cast

Couples

On August 26, 2021, Suni Lee and JoJo Siwa were announced as the first celebrity participants of the season, revealed during the virtual Television Critics Association summer press tour.[2] On September 1, it was reported that Olivia Jade, Amanda Kloots and Matt James would all be contestants on the season.[3][4] Prior to the official cast reveal, TMZ reported that The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore,[5] NBA player Iman Shumpert,[6] and actor Brian Austin Green[7] would be among the celebrity contestants competing. Mike "The Miz" Mizanin,[8] Jimmie Allen,[9] and Christine Chiu[10] were also reported to be competing. The full roster of celebrity participants were officially revealed on Good Morning America on September 8.[11][12]

The season's lineup of fifteen professional dancers was announced on September 2. The lineup is made up entirely of returning professionals, with Lindsay Arnold and Witney Carson returning following their respective pregnancies.[13] Absent from the lineup are Peta Murgatroyd and Keo Motsepe, who last competed in the previous season.[14] For the first time in the series' history, a same-sex partnership is featured amongst the competing couples,[15] after celebrity participant Siwa revealed herself as pansexual in April 2021.[16][17]

On September 26, professional dancer Cheryl Burke announced that she had tested positive for COVID-19, prior to the second episode of the season. Due to this, Burke revealed that she is now required to stay home and quarantine for 10 days.[18] As a result, Burke and her celebrity partner, Cody Rigsby, could not compete in the second live show, but instead were judged on their rehearsal footage.[19] Rigsby tested positive for COVID-19 a few days later, though the two will continue competing together, dancing in separate rooms.[20]

On September 10, 2021, it was announced that Sofia Ghavami and Ezra Sosa would be joining the show as professional dancers. Both dancers are showcased as part of the competing couples' dances throughout the season, and will also be prepared to step in if a pro is unable to compete.[23]
